About Visual Memory
What is Visual Memory?
Visual short-term memory lets you briefly retain what you just saw — colors, shapes and, in this task, the positions of tiles on a grid. Unlike sequence tasks, the whole pattern appears at once, so you memorize a spatial layout rather than an order; one result does not measure general memory ability.
This site draws inspiration from visual pattern span paradigms studied in cognitive psychology, where participants reproduce briefly shown grid patterns of increasing size. The research paradigm is established, but this browser implementation is not standardized, norm-referenced, or clinically validated.
In daily life, visual memory is everywhere: recalling where you parked, finding an icon you saw on a screen, remembering the layout of a room after the lights go out, or spotting what changed on a familiar shelf.

The Visuospatial Sketchpad
In Alan Baddeley's working memory model, the visuospatial sketchpad temporarily stores visual and spatial information. Grid-pattern tasks like this one are classic ways researchers probe that component, separately from verbal memory.
Capacity Limits
Research by Nelson Cowan and others suggests visual working memory holds only about 3-4 independent "chunks" at once. Higher levels become possible mainly by grouping tiles into larger meaningful units, not by storing more single tiles.
Gestalt Grouping
The visual system automatically organizes nearby or aligned tiles into shapes — lines, triangles, letters. Patterns that form good shapes are far easier to retain, which is why the same tile count can feel easy or impossible.
Individual Differences
Task performance can vary with age, attention, familiarity, strategy and testing conditions. This site has no age-specific norms and cannot evaluate development or decline.

Chunk Into Shapes
Connect lit tiles into lines, triangles or letters. One remembered shape is cheaper than five separate tiles.
Anchor to Landmarks
Corners, edges and the center are easy reference points — encode tiles relative to them.
Keep a Scanning Order
Read the pattern in a fixed order (e.g. top-left to bottom-right) and click back in the same order to reduce omissions.
Expect Practice Effects
