A Schulte table turns visual search into a number. Because the digits are scattered at random, there is no shortcut: each one has to be found by moving your attention across the grid, and the clock records how long that took.

The useful metric is average time per cell, not total time. A 7×7 grid has more than five times the cells of a 3×3 one, so totals are incomparable across sizes — which is why this site groups records by grid size and reports the per-cell average alongside them.

The per-number curve in each record is often more informative than the average. A flat line means a steady sweep; a few tall spikes usually mean a number sat outside where you were looking, or that attention briefly dropped. This describes performance under this site's rules and is not a standardized or clinically validated measure.

The Schulte Grid

The grid is credited to the German psychiatrist Walter Schulte, who used number tables to look at attention and work pace. Variants have circulated in research and training ever since, though the format has never been standardized into a single validated instrument.

Serial Visual Search

Searching for one digit among many similar digits is a serial search: nothing about the target makes it pop out, so attention has to be moved item by item. This is why time rises steeply as the grid grows, rather than staying flat.
