About the Chimp Test

What is the Chimp Test?

The Chimp Test is a number-position memory task: you must retain both where each number sits and their ascending order after they vanish. It combines spatial memory with sequence recall in a single snapshot; one result does not measure general memory ability.

The task became famous through research at Kyoto University\'s Primate Research Institute, where Tetsuro Matsuzawa and colleagues trained chimpanzees on a "limited-hold" version of it. A young chimpanzee named Ayumu reproduced numeral positions after extremely brief exposures, performing at a level many human visitors found hard to match. This browser implementation is inspired by that paradigm but is not standardized, norm-referenced, or clinically validated.

In everyday terms, the same ability is at work when you glance at a seating chart and walk to your row, or when you note where several items sit on a shelf before the cupboard door closes.

Scientific Principles

The Ayumu Studies

In a 2007 study by Inoue and Matsuzawa, young chimpanzees reproduced numeral layouts shown for a fraction of a second. The finding sparked wide debate about rapid visual encoding in primates — and inspired countless human attempts at the same game.

Working Memory Span

Human working memory typically holds only a handful of independent items. Because every number adds both a position and an order slot, rounds beyond 8-10 numbers push most people past their comfortable span, which is what makes the task engaging.

The Trade-Off Hypothesis

Matsuzawa proposed that humans may have traded some detailed, snapshot-like visual memory for language capabilities during evolution — one suggested interpretation of why young chimpanzees excel here. It remains a hypothesis under active discussion, not settled fact.

Individual Differences

Task performance can vary with age, attention, familiarity, strategy and testing conditions. This site has no age-specific norms and cannot evaluate development or decline.
