Free Stroop Test PDF Download — Instant, No Signup

The Stroop test PDF download on this page lets you instantly generate and print a color-word cognitive test — completely free, no signup required. Choose between a research-inspired 3-condition format (based on Stroop's 1935 paradigm) or a quick single-page version for classrooms, workshops, and brain-training activities. Every download is print-ready for A4 and Letter paper.

The Stroop test is one of the most widely used cognitive assessments in psychology. Originally developed by John Ridley Stroop in 1935, it measures cognitive control — your brain's ability to suppress automatic responses and focus on relevant information. Our printable PDF version makes it easy to run the classic experiment offline, without relying on digital tools or internet access.

The standard Stroop test consists of three conditions: a Word page (reading color words in black ink), a Color page (naming the ink color of XXXX symbols), and a Color-Word page (naming the ink color when it conflicts with the word meaning). Our Research-Inspired Edition PDF demonstrates this three-condition paradigm with 100 items per page. Note: this is a simplified demonstration, not a standardized or norm-referenced clinical instrument.

While digital Stroop tests offer precise millisecond timing, printable PDF downloads remain useful in many educational settings: classrooms without reliable internet, teacher-led workshops, course experiments, group activities, and hands-on demonstrations of cognitive interference. All three templates below are free to download — just click any card to start the download.

Who Uses Printable Stroop Tests?

  • Teachers — Demonstrate cognitive psychology concepts in AP Psychology, neuroscience, or biology classes
  • Researchers — Demonstrate the Stroop effect in lab courses and pilot studies
  • Students — Explore cognitive interference for class projects and science fairs
  • Parents & Tutors — Fun brain training activities for children and students
  • Team Leaders — Engaging ice-breaker activities for meetings and workshops

Online vs. Printable: When to Use Each

Our online Stroop test provides precise reaction time measurement and automatic scoring — ideal for individual assessment. The printable PDF version is better for group administration, offline use, and classroom demonstrations where participants can compare results side by side.

Important: These printable materials are inspired by the Stroop color-word paradigm (Stroop, 1935) and are provided for educational and research demonstration purposes only. They are NOT standardized, norm-referenced, or validated clinical instruments. Scores cannot be compared to published norms. For clinical assessment, use a commercially published instrument administered by a qualified professional.

Understanding the 3-Condition Format

The Research-Inspired Edition PDF contains multiple pages. Here's what each page is and what the participant should do.

W

Word Page — Read the Words

Color words (RED, BLUE, GREEN…) printed in black ink. The participant reads each word aloud, left to right, row by row. This is the baseline — it measures reading speed.

C

Color Page — Name the Ink Color

XXXX symbols printed in different colored inks. The participant says the ink color of each symbol aloud (e.g., if XXXX is printed in red, say "red"). This measures color-naming speed.

CW

Color-Word Page — Name the Ink Color, Ignore the Word

Color words printed in mismatched ink (e.g., the word "RED" printed in blue ink). The participant must say the ink color ("blue"), NOT read the word. This is the hardest page — the conflict between word and ink creates the Stroop interference effect.

Administration Tips

  • Administer in order: W → C → CW. Always give the easiest condition first.
  • Time each page with a stopwatch — 45 seconds per page. Say "stop" when time is up.
  • Mark where the participant stopped and count correct items.
  • Record results on the Timing Record page included in the PDF.

Interference Score Formula

W = correct items on Word page in 45s
C = correct items on Color page in 45s
CW = correct items on Color-Word page in 45s
1. Predicted CW = (W × C) ÷ (W + C)
2. Interference = Actual CW − Predicted CW

Positive = better inhibition than expected. Negative = more susceptible to interference.
